Choose UH Hilo’s residence halls if you want to be on campus, have a meal plan, and pay by the semester. Most halls require a meal plan. Choose an off-campus apartment if you want your own kitchen, a 12-month home base, and more independence. UH Hilo doesn’t require students to live on campus, but first-year students who apply by the priority deadline get first priority for hall assignments. The best choice depends on your budget, how much you cook, and whether you’ll stay in Hilo year-round.
Hale Kawili, at 430 West Kawili Street, gives you apartment living just steps from UH Hilo and close to Hawaiʻi Community College. Our two-bedroom apartments come with private bedrooms. Leases run 12 months, and residents get free parking for one vehicle and 1-Gig internet service.
Do UH Hilo Students Have to Live on Campus?
No. We found no live-on requirement on UH Hilo’s housing pages. Under UH Hilo’s Terms of Assignment, traditional first-year students (those who finished high school the spring before enrolling) who apply by the priority deadline get first priority for hall assignments. The university calls living on campus “highly beneficial for first-year undergraduate students.”
To live in the halls, you need to be enrolled in at least 12 credits (6 for graduate students) and admitted to a classified program of study. Both UH Hilo and Hawaiʻi Community College students can apply through University Housing.
What Are UH Hilo’s Residence Hall Options?
UH Hilo has five residence halls, from traditional double rooms to apartment-style units. Each has its own room layouts, rules, and price per semester.
Traditional Halls
- Hale Kanilehua: Double rooms, with shared bathrooms on each floor.
- Hale Kauanoe: Double rooms and shared floor bathrooms, with separate wings for men and women.
Suite-Style Halls
- Hale Kēhau: Four-person suites with two shared bedrooms and a shared bathroom.
- Hale ʻAlahonua: Two-person units, each with two single bedrooms and a private bathroom.
Apartment-Style Hall
Hale ʻIkena has furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments with a kitchen and a living room, for two to four residents each. To live there, you need to be 21 or older or have completed 30 credit hours. It’s also the only hall where a meal plan isn’t required.
How Much Do UH Hilo Dorms Cost?
These are UH Hilo’s 2026–27 rates per semester, from the Living On Campus page:
- Hale Kanilehua or Hale Kauanoe double room: $1,954
- Hale Kēhau double bedroom in a four-person suite: $2,470
- Hale ʻIkena two-bedroom apartment shared by four: $2,874
- Hale ʻAlahonua single bedroom in a two-person unit: $3,474
All residents except those in Hale ʻIkena must also buy a meal plan. Plans for 2026–27 run from $2,918 per semester (7 meals a week plus $500 in points) to $3,383 per semester (14 meals a week plus $325 in points). For example, a double room in Hale Kanilehua with the smallest meal plan comes to $4,872 per semester.
When you compare these costs with an apartment, look at monthly rent, utilities, internet, groceries, and how many months you’ll actually live in Hilo.
How Do Dorm Contracts Compare to Apartment Leases?
Dorm contracts and apartment leases differ in when you pay, how long you’re committed, and what happens over breaks.
UH Hilo Housing Contracts
UH Hilo bills housing by semester. Fall residents don’t have to reapply for spring. For Fall 2026, move-in ran August 18–21. Residents who aren’t approved for winter housing, or who aren’t returning in spring, must check out by December 19, 2026. Cancellation fees depend on timing, so check the cancellations and refunds page before you commit.
Off-Campus Apartment Leases
Off-campus apartments usually use longer leases. At Hale Kawili, every lease is a 12-month installment lease. You keep your apartment over winter break and through the summer, so there’s no move-out between semesters.
What Rules Come With Living in UH Hilo Dorms?
UH Hilo’s residence life policies apply to everyone living in the halls:
- Courtesy hours: “24 Hour Courtesy Hours” are in effect at all times.
- Guests: Hosts must escort their guests at all times. Overnight guests (11 p.m. to 9 a.m.) need every roommate’s agreement at least three days ahead, and each resident can host overnight guests for up to five nights per semester.
- Dry halls: Hale Kauanoe, Hale Kanilehua, Hale Kēhau, and the B-Wing of Hale ʻAlahonua are alcohol-free.
- Personal property: University Housing doesn’t insure your belongings and recommends renter’s insurance.
What Should You Know Before Renting an Apartment in Hilo?
Renting off campus comes with a few basics, and Hawaiʻi law protects tenants in some important ways.
Hawaiʻi Security Deposit Rules
Under Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes §521-44, a security deposit can’t be more than one month’s rent. Landlords must return your deposit, or send a written, itemized notice of any amount they’re keeping, within 14 days after the rental agreement ends. The Hawaiʻi Office of Consumer Protection has more landlord-tenant resources.
Utilities and Setup
Apartment residents usually set up electricity themselves. Hawaiian Electric provides power on Hawaiʻi Island. At Hale Kawili, residents set up electric service and can add 1-Gig internet.
Furnishing Your Apartment
Many off-campus apartments come unfurnished, so you can choose your own furniture. Plan for a bed, a desk and chair, storage, and kitchen supplies before move-in day.
How Do You Choose Between UH Hilo Dorms and an Apartment?
Ask yourself these questions before you decide:
- Do I want a meal plan, or would I rather cook for myself?
- Will I stay in Hilo over winter break and summer?
- Do I want a private bedroom or a shared room?
- Do I need a car, and where will I park it?
- What’s my total budget once I add up rent, utilities, food, and transportation?
If you’d rather cook, have your own bedroom, and live in Hilo year-round, an apartment like Hale Kawili may be the better fit. You get a 12-month home base just steps from campus, private bedrooms, and free parking for one vehicle.
